Apple revealed a much-needed upgrade to the MacBook Pro line-up in 2021. Revamped 14in and 16in models use the latest M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, delivering big performance and power efficiency improvements. Both devices have also been redesigned, with lots more ports and even a notch.
Despite Apple launching a new MacBook Air and 13in MacBook Pro at WWDC, there’s little chance of either of these devices being updated until next year at the earliest. You can safely purchase the 14in or 16in MacBook Pro without worrying a new model is just around the corner. With some great discounts in the US and UK, this August is a great time to buy one.

How much did the new MacBook Pro 14in and 16in cost at launch?
Appearing alongside – rather than completely replacing – the M1 variant of 13in MacBook Pro, the new 14in and 16in models are a little more expensive, starting at £1,899/$1,999 and £2,399/$2,499 respectively, and that price will rise if you customise your Mac before you buy it.
Here’s a list of stock pricing for reference:
- MacBook Pro 14 (M1 Pro 8-core CPU, 14-core GPU, 16GB memory, 512GB storage) – £1,899 / $1,999
- MacBook Pro 14 (M1 Pro 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 16GB memory, 1TB storage) – £2,399 / $2,499

- MacBook Pro 16 (M1 Max 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 32GB memory, 1TB storage) – £3,299 / $3,499
Should I buy refurbished?
With the MacBook Pro 14in and 16in expected to remain close to full price for the foreseeable future, the only place you’ll see bigger discounts is on refurbished models. Some might see this as another word for ‘second hand’, but in reality many of these devices have barely been used at all.
Remember, if a product has been used for demonstration purposes or returned as an unwanted gift, retailers must classify them as ‘refurbished’ despite looking and performing just like new. It’s true that there are situations where a fault has been fixed, so it’s worth checking the description for any device you’re considering buying.
If you’re looking for a cheap MacBook Pro, the first place to look is the
Apple Refurbished Store, which is already selling some of the 2021 models.
MusicMagpie and
Hoxton Macs are great alternatives, but neither are selling these devices at the time of writing.

What’s new with the 2021 MacBook Pro 14in and 16in?
The latest 14in and 16in MacBook Pro offer a significant change compared to their predecessors; as well as the 13.3in model jumping to 14.2in, the new range sport smaller bezels and a 120Hz Super Retina XDR display with HDR support, the return of ports including HDMI, an SD Card Reader and even the beloved MagSafe, and the next-gen Apple Silicon chips.
In a surprise move, there isn’t one but two new Apple Silicon chips; the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The M1 Pro offers an impressive upgrade over the M1, with up to 10 CPU cores and 16 GPU cores, while the M1 Max offers the very best performance Apple has to offer, with the same 10 CPU cores and a whopping 32 GPU cores.

When combined with up to 64GB of Unified Memory, the MacBook Pro has the potential to provide serious computing power.
It hasn’t come at a cost to battery life either, with Apple quoting a 17-hour battery life for the MacBook Pro 14in, while the MacBook Pro 16in offers the best battery life of any Mac to date with an impressive 21 hours.
