Borderlands is probably this year’s most bizarre movie, although it has a strong rival in The Crow. The adaptation of the critically and audience-acclaimed first-person shooter game franchise should be a smash hit – but it’s a massive disappointment.
In recent years, game adaptations have finally picked up steam – at least where TV series are concerned. Netflix’s Arcane, HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout won the hearts of viewers and critics alike.
On the other hand, movies such as Uncharted and Mortal Kombat received mixed reviews and were poorly received by game fans. It looks like Borderlands joins their ranks.
All indications are that the messy production process has strongly affected the film, and as such, the Borderlands movie is likely to be a flop in spite of the cast’s big names, including Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Lionsgate, the studio behind Borderlands, is trying to claw back some cash by quickly introducing the movie to home media.
If you’re curious about when the movie will be available to watch at home, we have what you need.
How to watch Borderlands now
The game adaptation is currently in cinemas in the US and the UK.
If you want to watch Borderlands in the cinema, you can book tickets at the AMC Theatres and Fandango websites in the US and at Vue, Cineworld, Odeon, and Showcase in the UK.
Here’s the trailer for the movie:
When will Borderlands be released on VOD?
In the States, the movie is now available on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. You can rent Borderlands for $19.99 or buy it for $24.99.
Lionsgate has yet to announce when the film will appear on VOD in the UK.
When will Borderlands be released on DVD/Blu-ray?
You can currently pre-order physical copies of Borderlands on the Amazon website in the US and the UK.
The DVD edition costs $24.49 / £9.99, the Blu-Ray is priced at $24.95 / £14.99, while for 4K Ultra HD you’ll have to pay $34.49 / £24.99. A limited-edition 4K Steelbook is also available, which costs $28.93 / £35.00.
However, Lionsgate still hasn’t announced when physical copies of Borderlands will be ready to ship.
Smash-hit John Wick 4 hit store shelves three weeks after the VOD premiere. Conversely, the equally successful The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes appeared on DVD and Blu-ray around two months after dropping on digital.
On the other hand, physical copies of box office flop The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare arrived two and a half months after hitting Prime Video. Curiously, April’s Boy Kills World is still waiting for DVD and Blu-ray premiere.
Lionsgate
Lionsgate might wait the standard time and release the film on DVD and Blu-ray around two and a half months after the VOD release. In that case, physical copies of Borderlands could be available in November 2024.
When could Borderlands be released on streaming services?
Lionsgate films usually appear on streaming six months after theatrical release, just like the blockbusters John Wick 4 and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
If Lionsgate wants to follow this rule for Borderlands, the film could appear on Starz in February 2025. Later, the movie will drop on Peacock. But its poor box office performance could mean that it arrives earlier.
The basic Starz subscription costs $8.99 per month or $74.99 per year with a seven-day free trial. You can get the basic ad-supported Peacock Premium for $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year.
Songbirds & Snakes and John Wick 4 were released on Prime Video in the UK, so Borderlands may also hit this streaming service around February 2025. An Amazon Prime subscription costs £8.99 per month, but new users can get a 30-day free trial.
