A Coahoma County woman has died following a motor vehicle accident on rain-slick streets in south Clarksdale Thursday morning.

Clarksdale Police Chief Sandra J. Williams said police responded to a two-vehicle accident at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 in the area of Highway 49 and its intersection with Rain Street.

“A Circle S Irrigation pickup truck driven by Roger Cavallo, Jr., 41, of Olive Branch, and a vehicle driven by LaDonna Butler, 28, of Alligator collided,” said Williams. “Ms. Butler was transported to the local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries sustained in the accident. Mr. Cavallo went to the hospital by personal vehicle.”

Williams said the cause of the accident has not been determined as of noon Thursday and Clarksdale Police Department is the investigating agency.

A winter storm moved through the area today and rain fell on Clarksdale all morning and was predicted to continue through the evening.

Motorist are reminded to slow down in rain as it hinders visibility and the ability to avoid an accident.

This was Clarksdale’s first traffic fatality of 2021.

Four fatalities occurred on Dec. 17, 2020 when a car was hit by a bus at the intersection of Highways 161 and 61 at around 6 p.m. Friday.

That accident occurred in the city limits and Clarksdale Police, Clarksdale Fire Department and local ambulance crews responded to the crash.
