Countries Where Gambling Is Most Prevalent

No matter how far back in history you go, evidence can be found that gambling was taking place in these societies. In fact, gambling has been present since the dawn of human history and the earliest evidence of this can be traced back to Ancient China. It is thought that some sort of lottery game took place and was probably used to raise funds for state projects.

Dice have been unearthed that date as far back as 3000bc. The Greek poet Sophocles even mentioned dice in his writings and the Ancient Greeks and Romans loved to gamble too. Even playing cards date back to 9th Century China. What’s clear is that the world loves to gamble and some countries are fonder of gambling than others, especially when players learn the calls to win.

Modern Day Gambling

It will come as no surprise to discover that gambling is as popular across the modern world as it has ever been. Gambling is now mainstream and has long shed its image of being something that happens behind closed doors.

Even though betting is as old as society itself, in recent years it has undergone a huge transformation. This is mostly down to the digital age that changed the entertainment industry back in the 1990s.

This revolution has brought a change in the cliental that gambling attracts. It used to be a male-dominated pass time mostly confined to betting shops, arcades and casinos.

The invention of the internet has changed everything. Online casinos have already been around for a number of years and they have become more sophisticated and much more popular than ever before.

These sites have brought gambling to a wider audience that also includes record numbers of women. This is mainly due to technology making online casinos more accessible to the masses. You don’t even need a computer these days as you gamble on mobile devices such as smartphones.

It’s not only the availability that has caused a sharp spike in online gambling. The games are more sophisticated and entertaining too. With all this in mind, there are still countries where gambling is more prevalent than others and the country that comes out tops is Australia.

Online gambling is pretty free and easy in Australia and sports betting and slots are a national favourite. New South Wales accounts for half of the country’s poker machines.

Singapore is next and the first casino opened here in 2010. Since then Singapore has become one of the biggest gambling nations in the world. The government has imposed entrance fees to casinos to discourage their popularity for fear of gambling addiction amongst citizens.

Ireland is a nation famous for its love of gambling. Horseracing is a particular favourite here and some of the Irish bred horses are the best in the world. The lottery and casino games are also very popular here.

Finland is the surprise entry here and it is thought that 41% of the adult population gamble weekly. The minimum age for gambling was raised from 15 to 18 back in 2011. Italy, Norway, Hong Kong, Greece and Spain complete the top 10.
