District Collector A. Md. Imtiaz flagged off two electric vehicles which were procured by the State government through the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of AP (NREDCAP) as part of an initiative to promote renewable energy.

The district is supposed to get a fleet of 75 electric vehicles, including 30 for the Capital Region Development Authority, 25 for the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and others for officials of various departments.

The two Tiago EV vehicles, manufactured by Tata, were approved and flagged off on Thursday. The vehicles will be used by the VMC officials whose office was recently provided with a charging kiosk.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Imtiaz called upon the officials of NREDCAP to create awareness among the officials and public encouraging use of electric vehicles in place of that run on fossil fuel.

Mr. Imtiaz said that the range of the vehicle was 130-150 km per charge and was highly cost-effective compared to petrol and diesel versions. He said that the vehicle would be suitable for VMC officials as they can travel not less than 100 km a day. Joint Collector-2 P. Babu Rao, Deputy Transport Commissioner E. Meera Prasad, NREDCAP project director Srinivasa Rao and others were present.
