SEVEN new driving laws are set to come into force next month.
The new rules that are expected to affect drivers in the next 12 months, will be set in a bid to balance the economy and reduce the impact on the environment.
Motorists will be affected by the changes, with fines and penalty points.
So from ‘pay per mile’ to ‘clean air zone charges’, here are seven things to look out for.
‘Pay per Mile’ road pricing
One of the changes is the ‘Pay per Mile’ road charge that would mean the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) fuel duty cost would be scrapped.
Drivers would be charged based on the distance they have covered during their journey, rather than based on fuel type.
This way electric cars drivers would also be taxed – they are currently exempt as VED is based on emission levels.
Local clean air zone charges
Local clean air zones charges aim to decrease the number of journeys and lower pollution.
Motorists in Bath and Birmingham face an extra daily road charge.
Birmingham’s scheme will charge drivers up to £8 per day in the city centre while a clean air zone is also being considered in Bristol.
Fuel duty increase
The predicted budget rise in fuel duty could be another headache for drivers.
The 57.95p a litre tax on fuel, could rise by 1-2p after a 10-year- freeze.
The change could raise between £250 to £470millions but would also affect low-income drivers the most.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED)
Another possible change is an increase in VED, which normally rises every year with inflation.
An increase in VED could mean petrol and diesel cars might cost drivers up to £155.
A new purchase tax has been proposed by the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC).
In a bid to make British streets more eco-friendly, the new tax is aimed at petrol and diesel car owners.
The purpose of the tax is to make environmentally-friendly vehicles more affordable while those whose cars emit more than 225gCO2/km will be required to pay a 50% purchase tax from this year, which would increase in instalments.
Outer London driving charge
An outer London driving charge would see drivers having to pay £3.50 a day to enter the outer boroughs.
‘Benefit in Kind’
The reintroduction of the Benefit in Kind rates is also considered after they were scrapped last year.
Starting from April, drivers might need to pay up to £390 per year to use their vehicles.
Initially, there will be a 1% charge, based on income and vehicle value, but it is likely to rise to 2% in 2022.
