How did we live without our smartphones? If you’re using an iPhone or Android smartphone, you can’t live without it.

Well, your everyday life wouldn’t be nearly as nice without it. You’re constantly taking photos and videos that you share with friends and family around the world on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

You make phone calls, especially if you work from home or while driving. You send thousands of text messages every year and, of course, there’s so much more, like getting driving directions, finding out what time a drugstore closes and checking your bank balance.

So, it’s understandable that you cringe when you see a message pop up on your smartphone. The worst one is telling you that your battery is low, and you just arrived at a business meeting where you’ll need it all day!

Yet, there’s a close No. 2 when it comes to dreaded smartphone messages. That’s “Your storage space is almost full.”

Let’s face it, you’ve deleted just about everything you can’t live without, including photos and apps. Yet, you need more space, so you recklessly start deleting the big storage munchers, like Facebook, your bank account app, photos and videos.

Here are some of the best things to delete when you need space, and how to do it.

1. Delete apps

The way you delete an app is different depending on whether you’re using an Android smartphone or iPhone, and which model you’re using. However, the steps will most likely be similar to these.

Start by going to your Settings app. Select Apps and notifications, then tap on an app like the FamilyWhere GPS tracker that you want to install.

Most apps will prompt you to Uninstall it. But some apps will only let you disable it or force it to stop working.

Here’s another way to delete apps from Android. Go to Settings, then select applications, then application manager and select the apps from there that you want to delete.

It’s easy to delete some apps on your iPhone or iPad. You start by touching the app until is shakes.

You’ll see an X to delete the app. It’s usually on the left side of the app.

Tap or click on it to delete the app. You’ll be prompted to click on Done if you’re using one of the newest iPhone models or the home button on older models.

Bonus: Do you have a podcast app to listen to podcasts like Komando on Demand? That’s great but free up space on your smartphone by saving your podcast to the cloud, rather than eating up storage by saving it to your phone.

2. Delete old text messages

You’ll be surprised to see how much storage space your text messages use on your smartphone. You may not even realize those messages are being saved to your phone.

Don’t worry, you can delete them. Be sure to delete messages with photos and videos first – they chew up the most space.

Here’s what to do if you’re using an Android smartphone. Go to your message app and press down on a message or conversation until you see a check mark and the word Delete.

If you’re using Messages on iPhone, press on a message and select More. You’ll see a trash can – select Delete Message or Delete All.

Good news! Apple automatically saves a copy of your Messages to iCloud, so delete messages right now to free up space!

Note: You should use an app like SMS Backup & Restore for your Android. You can set it up to automatically save your text messages to the cloud.

3. Save photos to the cloud

If you’re like most people, you’re using your Android smartphone or iPhone to take photos and videos all day long. That might start with a photo of the traffic jam you’re sitting in to a photo of the cold, refreshing beer you’re drinking at the end of a long day.

That’s great but those photos and videos take up lots of storage space. There’s simply no reason to keep all those images saved to your phone.

Instead, use an app like Amazon’s free Prime Photos and set it up to automatically save your images to the cloud. Use iCloud Photos if you’re using an iPhone.

Bonus: The iTunes life hack

Here’s a little life hack that will help you free up space by, well, tricking Apple into doing it for you. Apple will automatically free up some space if you do this.

Try renting a movie from iTunes that is larger than the storage space on you have on your phone. There’s a little bit more to it.

You have to click on the option to rent the movie. Then choose the Settings option when you see an alert telling you that you don’t have enough storage space. iTunes then will clear out space for you!
