Google Maps – probably the most popular digital map navigation app – is returning to the Apple Watch.
This comes three years after Google removed its Maps app from Apple Watch without explanation. No doubt it’s a good sign, suggesting that Apple has made the process of developing and transitioning apps for the Apple Watch easier.
What can Google Maps do on Apple Watch?
Features include route estimates with estimated arrival times and step-by-step directions to and from locations. Public transport and footpaths are also supported.
Google Maps version 5.52 does not allow you to search for a new destination directly from the Apple Watch, however. For new trips to locations that are not already stored on the Apple Watch, you have to use the iPhone to start the process. You can then continue navigating on the Apple Watch.
Google Maps has been available for CarPlay since August.
How to get Google Maps on Apple Watch
In order to be able to set up the new version on the Apple Watch you need to have the current version of Google Maps (5.52) installed on your iPhone.
In addition watchOS 5.0 or later is required on the Apple Watch.
Once the app is installed on your iPhone the Watch version should automatically download.
