Huawei is set to announce its latest flagship smartphone range on 26 March and thanks to plenty of leaked renders we already know a lot about the devices. We’re used to the company keeping back certain products as surprises during the launch – gadgets even the press doesn’t get pre-briefed on – and it’s possible that an updated smartwatch is one of them.
WinFuture.de – a regular source of reliable information on upcoming Huawei products, and the site which also leaked the Watch GT 2 – has somehow got hold of images of the new Watch GT 2e which comprises of three colours: Graphite, Volcano and Mint.
Currently there’s no indication of what the ‘e’ suffix stands for, but the naming strategy makes it clear this isn’t meant to be an all-new wearable but an evolution – perhaps that is the explanation? – of its predecessor.
The images are of the 46mm model which appears to have a broadly similar design with a few tweaks here and there, such as redesigned buttons and new, sporty straps that bear more than a passing resemblance to the Nike version of the Apple Watch.
There is no word on whether an updated 42mm Watch GT 2 will be launched as well.
Note that the bezel is different on the Mint version, ditching the tachymeter markings for a plainer, yet stylish look.
There are also some new watch faces, which may well be exclusive to the GT 2e.
Huawei Watch GT 2e specification rumours
But in other respects, there doesn’t seem to be any major changes. The specs listed by WinFuture are basically the same as the Watch GT 2:
- Lite OS operating system
- Kirin A1 processor (Hi1132)
- 46 mm dial case
- 1.39-inch AMOLED 454 x 454 resolution
- 4GB storage
- Bluetooth 5.1
- USB Type-C magnetic charging base
- Dimensions: 53×10.8×46.8mm
- 455mAh battery
- 25g (likely without strap)
For those unfamiliar with Lite OS, it is Huawei’s own design and doesn’t allow apps to be installed. However, the trade-off is up to 14 days of battery life. While not listed in the rumoured specs, there is also sure to be the GPS, microphone and speaker present in the Watch GT 2 allowing the watch to track your workouts without needing a phone’s GPS receiver and to make and receive phone calls.
Huawei Watch GT 2e release date rumours
Being announced with the Huawei P40 on 26 March, we expect that the watch will go on sale in China in April. It might take longer for it to reach Europe and the UK, and it’s possible that it won’t ever be available in the US. We will have to wait and see.
Huawei Watch GT 2e price rumours
The estimate from retailers, according to WinFuture, is €200. And that is certainly believable.
That’s roughly the price of the existing Watch GT 2, which you can often find discounted to around £150. The Sunset Orange Watch GT 2 is available from Amazon for almost exactly that price, which is 25% off the RRP.
