iPhone 15 preview: will Apple’s base flagship offer more this time?

iPhone 15 Intro
The iPhone 15 is expected to come sometime this September, as is tradition with new iPhone announcements, and unlike its predecessor, it is rumored to be a more significant jump in terms of upgrades. Among the improvements, we should see a new chipset, a much more capable main camera, improved battery life, and more.Needless to say, all of the information that has popped up so far consists of leaks and reports, so none of it is set in stone. That being said, the sources that share these insights all have solid track records, making what they claim the best sneak peek at the upcoming iPhone 15 we have got. Let’s see what we have learned so far!

What’s new about the iPhone 15?

  • 48MP main camera
  • A16 Bionic chipset
  • Dynamic Island
  • Faster memory
  • USB-C
  • Slimmer bezels (maybe)
  • Faster charging (maybe)

iPhone 15 Unboxing

The iPhone 15 unboxing experience should be very similar to what we are all used to by now — a thin retail box with the phone itself, some documentation, a SIM ejector tool, and no charging brick. The only difference we expect to see is the addition of a USB-C charging cable, as all new iPhones are said to come with a USB-C charging port this year.

iPhone 15 Specs

Check out the iPhone 15 rumored specs in the table below.

iPhone 15 Design and Colors

Apple has not changed the look of its entry-level flagship in a substantial way in quite a while now. That is said to somewhat change this year, though, with the transition from the notch we have all come to know throughout the last few years, to the Dynamic Island pill-shaped cutout that first appeared last year on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Besides the Dynamic Island, there has also been talk about the iPhone 15 getting thinner bezels, although that rumor is more likely to turn out true for the Pro models only. As for the rest of the phone, you can expect the same boxy build consisting of an aluminum frame with a 6.1-inch flat screen at the front and a glass back. And, of course, we can’t forget the new USB-C charging port at the bottom.

Colors-wise, there should be two new options to choose from, apart from the more generic ones that come with each generation.

iPhone 15 rumored colors:

  • midnight
  • starlight
  • (PRODUCT)RED
  • dark pink
  • light blue
  • yellow

iPhone 15 Display

The display of the iPhone 15 is a bit of a mixed bag. While the previously Pro-exclusive Dynamic Island will be coming to the less expensive models alongside all of its software functionality and features, Apple will, more likely than not, still keep the same 60Hz screen refresh rate. Most other phones on the Android side in this price category have been offering a higher refresh rate display for years now, so it is hard to not see this as an obvious flaw in the iPhone 15. There is a reason why the Pro models have been selling better, however, and this is one of them. But who knows, maybe Apple will surprise us?

Everything else about the display should remain the same, meaning a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel with a pixel resolution of 2532 x 1170 and a pixel density of 457 PPI (pixels per inch). Add to that the 800 nits of nominal brightness and 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness, and you have a really good-looking display in your hands.

iPhone 15 Camera

The camera system is one area where the iPhone 15 is expected to receive a significant upgrade by inheriting the same 48MP main image sensor we saw on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max last year. As it has been with previous generations, there will also be a 12MP ultra-wide, which for now is said to come with no changes.

With a 65% sensor powering the main snapper, we should see a noticeable improvement in image quality, especially when it comes to low-light scenarios. Additionally, there is a good chance the phone would be able to crop in on this larger sensor to create a high-quality 2x zoom, somewhat compensating for the lack of a dedicated telephoto camera.

Unfortunately, even though the 48MP main camera is said to be taken directly from the iPhone 14 Pro models, we don’t expect Apple to include the option to shoot in Apple ProRAW — a format that produces much higher quality images by capturing more information with each snap. Instead, that feature would remain Pro-exclusive. There is a workaround, though, in the form of third-party apps that allow you to shoot in a RAW format.

Lastly, we also have the same 12MP camera on the front that is capable of 60FPS video recording, 4K resolution, as well as Night and Portrait modes.

iPhone 15 Performance

Last year Apple decided to equip its non-Pro iPhones with the same chipsets featured in the previous generation. Chances are the iPhone 15 will receive the same treatment, adopting the A16 Bionic that debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Given how powerful Apple’s chips are, however, this shouldn’t be an alarming piece of news as the A16 is plenty capable of offering a good user experience, both in performance and power efficiency. Not to mention that the A17 Bionic that is expected to arrive with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max might be the main reason behind their rumored price hikes of $100. On the other hand, the regular models are said to remain at the same $799 price, so this could be a blessing in disguise.

The RAM will still be 6GB, but now the faster LPDDR5 type, which should mean apps and features work quicker than before.

iPhone 15 Software

The iPhone 15 will launch with Apple’s latest major OS update, iOS 17, which comes with a set of new features, apps, and design changes. There are plenty of details to learn about, however, so feel free to go and check out our summary of everything there is to know about iOS 17.

iPhone 15 Battery and Charging

Battery life on the iPhone has been top notch since the iPhone 13 series, with the iPhone 14 bringing small improvements on that front. The iPhone 15 will be most likely getting the same 3279mAh battery, but unlike the previous generation, it will have the more power-efficient A16 chipset built on the 4nm process, so we should see an overall longer battery life in comparison. Now, one would expect the charging speeds to also increase. Unfortunately, despite swapping the Lightning connector for a USB-C one, the iPhone 15 is said to remain with the same 20W wired charging. The same goes for the 15W MagSafe wireless charging.

Leaks point at higher wired charging speeds to be exclusive (at least for this generation) to the Pro models from the lineup.

Audio Quality

The iPhone 15 should come with the same stellar audio quality we saw from the iPhone 14 last year. We are talking S-tier phone stereo speakers here, so nothing to worry about. The same should also remain for the amazing haptics delivered by Apple’s TapTic engine.

Summary

If we were to look at the iPhone 15 from a birds’-eye view, it is easy to look at it as the iPhone 14 Pro but without the better display and telephoto camera. So, is it really worth the money? Well, if you manage to find a refurbished, second-hand, or some kind of sweet deal on last year’s Pro model that brings its price to around $800, then you should probably go for that one.

If you cannot find a nice deal on the iPhone 14 Pro, however, then the iPhone 15 would still be a good upgrade. This statement is more valid if you own an iPhone 12 or older, but there are also meaningful improvements like the much better main camera and the Dynamic Island (if that is something you care about) that the iPhone 15 has to offer.

Of course, the iPhone 15 is not out yet, so we can’t say anything for certain. Not to mention that there are already great options on the Android side, like the Galaxy S23, which does have a fast screen refresh rate and often enjoys some juicy discounts.
