The Mazda CX-5 SUV has been updated for 2020, with a new colour added to the car’s palette and a more efficient version of its Skyactiv-G petrol engine joining the line-up. The updated model range will be available to order from 1 April, with prices starting from £27,030.
Cosmetically the latest CX-5 is identical to last year’s model, with the exception of a new Polymetal Grey Metallic paint available as an optional extra. Inside, Mazda has also fettled the SUV’s eight-inch infotainment system, extending the reach of the graphics to the very edge of the screen to make it appear larger.
The biggest update for the CX-5 is the introduction of cylinder deactivation technology on the naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine. The system shuts down two of the unit’s four cylinders under light load, contributing to an 8g/km reduction in emissions. Power and torque figures remain at 163bhp and 210Nm respectively.
For the 2020 model buyers have a choice of three trim-levels: SE-L, Sport and GT Sport. Standard equipment for the entry-level SUV includes 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, front and rear parking sensors, LED fog lamps, automatic windscreen wipers, lane-keeping assist and dual-zone climate control.
Mid-range Sport models, which account for 73 percent of UK CX-5 sales, will be priced from £30,130. Equipment upgrades over the base-model will include 19-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, a power-operated tailgate, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and a 10-speaker Bose stereo system.
Prices for the flagship GT Sport variant will start from £32,530. As standard this version rides on a set of freshly designed 19-inch alloy wheels, a partially digitised instrument panel with a seven-inch display alongside traditional dials, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, adaptive LED headlamps and a 360-degree camera.
Engines include the aforementioned 2.0-litre petrol unit, as well as two versions of Mazda’s Skyactiv-D 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, available in either 148bhp or 181bhp outputs. All three powertrains can be specced with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the most powerful diesel can also be had with four-wheel-drive.
Over the last couple of years, Mazda has slowly revised the CX-5. In 2018, the company upped the output of its most powerful 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine from 171bhp to 181bhp and added some extra standard safety equipment. Another small update last year saw Apple CarPlay and Android Auto fitted as standard across the range.
The 2019 update also brought a range of chassis updates to the CX-5, designed to improve ride and handling. Revisions included a thicker front anti-roll bar, a smaller rear anti-roll bar, revised front stabiliser bushings and new urethane top-mounts for the rear dampers. All of these changes will be transferred wholesale on the 2020 model – along with some new sound deadening, which Mazda says improves cabin refinement.
