New 2019 Peugeot 208 images leaked online

Images of the all-new Peugeot 208 have been leaked on a French automotive news site, revealing the car’s exterior and interior design ahead of the car’s official reveal at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

The leaked exterior image shows the new 208 will replace the current model’s curves with crisper lines, taking inspiration from the brand’s latest 3008 and 5008 SUVs. Features include a pair of neatly-incorporated LED daytime running lights, as well as Peugeot’s latest upright grille design and U-shaped lower air intakes.

Peugeot’s new 208 appears to adopt a larger profile than its predecessor, with a footprint closer to that of its larger brother, the 308. Length has increased to around four metres, but the front and rear overhangs are shorter thanks to a longer wheelbase, which should increase head and legroom for the occupants.

The leaked interior image previews the new 208’s dashboard and infotainment system, which is a revised version of the brand’s controversial i-Cockpit set-up. Features include a digital gauge cluster, Alcantara-style sports seats, a funky square steering wheel and a floating dashboard supporting a high-mounted infotainment system.

Built on all-new underpinnings, called the Common Modular Platform (CMP), the new Peugeot 208 has been designed to support all-electric powertrains. Peugeot’s latest architecture will supposedly shed weight over Peugeot’s current PF1 architecture, hopefully offsetting the extra weight of the battery packs in the all-electric models.

If the recently-updated EMP2 platform is anything to go by, weight-savings should be significant with the new 208 being around 100kg lighter than its predecessor. The new platform was designed collaboratively with PSA’s Chinese manufacturing partner, Dongfeng, and will be used across a range of future PSA Group models.

Engine options will include a variety of small capacity turbo petrol units, as well as the inaugural all-electric system. Previously, Peugeot’s 3008 Project Manager, Marion David, told us “we are working on [electric powertrains] for the 208 platform. The range is not long enough for the larger cars yet.”

The petrols are expected to be three-cylinder turbos, with power ranging from around 70bhp up to nearly 150bhp for the 1.2-litre version. It’s not clear whether Peugeot will offer any diesel engines in its next-generation supermini.

As we revealed earlier this year, the range topping GTi will be offered both as a hot petrol model, as well as a powerful EV. It should offer more than 200bhp, as well as upgraded components that ensure it’s as fun to drive as its conventionally powered cousin.

The electric 208s would form part of the PSA Group’s plan to launch 11 EVs by 2021. While CMP will get a range of all-electric models, plug-in hybrids are on the way for larger cars like the new 3008 SUV, which will get a PHEV version in 2019.
