Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham trilogy remains not only a great set of comic book game adaptations, but some of the best action games of the modern era at all.

It’s been five long years since Batman: Arkham Knight came out in 2015, so fans are understandably eager for more from the world of Gotham. And rumour has it that Warner Bros. is ready to unveil its next Batman title – though if you’re expecting a straight sequel to Arkham Knight then you might want to lower your expectations now.

What will the next Batman game be called?

Since the game hasn’t officially been announced, we don’t know what the next Batman game will be called – or even if it will have ‘Arkham’ in the title to connect it to the previous series.

Early rumours suggested that the next game might be called Arkham Legacy, but we’d take that with a pinch of salt ourselves.

When will it come out?

Unsurprisingly, we don’t know this either. Warner Bros. was supposedly going to announced the game at E3 2020 alongside a new Harry Potter RPG, but with the tradeshow cancelled we don’t know how that would affect plans.

Either way, with an announcement still to come we’d be shocked to see the game any time in 2020 – expect this in 2021 at the earliest.

What platforms will the new Batman be on?

With a release likely from 2021 onwards, it stands to reason that the game will be for next-gen consoles, so look for it on the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. A PC release is likely too (lets hope it holds up better than Arkham Knight’s infamously bad PC port…), and it may well get a release for current-gen consoles too. We wouldn’t hold your breath for a Switch port though.

What will the story be about?

This is about the only area where we do know a little. Teases on Twitter from WB Montreal reveal logos belonging to the Gotham police department and the infamous League of Shadows, so it looks like that villainous group will have a major role to play in the game:

Earlier rumours suggest that the Court of Owls (another villainous organisation from the comics) will appear, as will the rest of the Batfamily, who will in fact be playable. Again, all of that is strictly speculation for now.

Is it made by Rocksteady?

No. While Rocksteady made the core three Arkham games (but not prequel Arkham Origins) they’re not behind this game, instead Warner Bros. Montréal is developing it.

Rocksteady might still have some connection to it though. Geeks WorldWide reports that this Batman title is the first in a new DC game expanded universe, with at least two other titles in the works: something unknown by Rocksteady, and a Superman game from another developer.
