You know how it is today — we can’t just have the one flagship from a company, we get the “regular” version and then the “plus” or “pro” or “mega” or “ultra” version. Essentially saying “This one is good, but this one goes to 11”. What are the differences? Well, this one goes to 11.

So, let’s figure this out. OnePlus is rumored to be launching yet another set of flagships in the first half of this year — the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. We’re not even touching the rumored OnePlus 9E here.

That said, what are the expected differences between the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, and which one should you save your pennies for? Let’s take a look at what we know:

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro design and display

One of the main differences to look for is in the screen. Historically, the OnePlus Pro models have always had a screen that curves over the sides, while the regular OnePlus phones had a flat screen. Rumors say this will be the case for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro as well.

Then, there’s size — the OnePlus 9 is expected to sport a 6.55-inch display, while the 9 Pro will be bigger at 6.78 inches.

In terms of refresh rate, both will support up to 120 Hz for smooth animations. Both will be OLED panels, but — rumors say — only the OnePlus 9 will have an LTPO OLED. Meaning, it can have adaptive refresh rate, lowering it drastically when you are looking at still images to preserve battery life.

Both will probably have little punch-holes for their selfie cameras right at the top of the screen. Back with the 7 series, OnePlus did put a motorized selfie camera in the 7 Pro, but that made the phone extra thick and heavy, so the company gave up on the tech, it seems.

OK, what else about the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro? Well, both will allegedly have glass backs, none of that plastic corner-cutting on the cheaper model. And the 9 Pro will reportedly have wireless charging, while the regular OnePlus 9 might not. Might! We’re still not sure on that point.

Rumors also state that the OnePlus 9 Pro will be IP68-rated for water-resistance. Fun fact — this does not mean that the OnePlus 9 will not be water-resistant. This was also a thing in the past — OnePlus phones were sealed tight for ingress protection, but didn’t get the rating due to cost-saving strategies. So, the OnePlus 9 will probably also be able to survive a small glass spill incident.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro camera

Historically, “regular” flagships differ from Pro models in the camera department. So, it’s no surprise that the same would hold true for the OnePlus 9 series.

Reportedly, both the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will sport a 48 MP main camera, which will perform the same on both models. Then, the OnePlus 9 will have a 48 MP ultra-wide camera, while the 9 Pro will dial it up to a 64 MP ultra-wide camera. And lastly, the 9 Pro will have a zoom camera — a 3.3x telephoto lens with a 64 MP sensor underneath. This should be killer for portrait shots!

Renders show that the OnePlus 9 has a 3rd camera in the main module and the 9 Pro has a 4th dot in there, too. But, we are not sure what they will be for. Maybe depth detection? Maybe something else… The OnePlus 8 Pro had this curious Photochrom camera there, but that quickly became controversial due to its possible X-Ray usage and OnePlus was quick to disable it.

While a funny scandal, it pretty much rendered a piece of hardware on the phone useless, so we don’t believe OnePlus will re-do the experiment. So, these extra lenses on the OnePlus 9 phones might just be depth sensors. Or they are the coveted macro cameras that we all want in our phones. Sorry for the sarcasm.

In any case, photo leaks show us Hasselblad branding on the OnePlus 9 Pro — looks like the OnePlus is putting the extra effort into making its cameras really, really competitive in 2021. The leaked alleged OnePlus 9 unit has an Ultrashot branding, which is OnePlus’ in-house branding for HDR+ tech. For what rumors tell us, OnePlus is working on fun modes like Tilt Shift, and Moon Mode, and will also — reportedly — add focus peaking to manual focus.

OnePlus 9 vs OnePlus 9 Pro specs

You won’t be making a compromise in performance should you choose to go with the OnePlus 9. As per rumors, both the 9 and 9 Pro will rock the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor — otherwise known as the flagship SoC for Android phones in 2021.

The differences begin when we start looking at storage options. Both the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will have 128 GB and 256 GB variants, but the Pro will also — allegedly — go up to 512 GB.

Then, the OnePlus 9 is expected to have 8 GB of RAM, while the 9 Pro will rock the overkill 12 GB RAM. In reality, 8 GB is plenty enough, but hey — the pro phones need their bragging rights.

There’s no word yet on microSD card support on the OnePlus 9 models, but we suppose they will have it.

As for battery, both phones are rumored to have 4,500 mAh cells — which is a bit weird, considering the OnePlus 9 Pro will be noticeably bigger. Maybe that room will be taken up by the extra camera tech, who knows.

In any case, last year’s OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro had 4,300 mAh and 4,510 mAh cells and they did just fine in the field of battery life, so no concern there.

The OnePlus 9 phones will also support 65 W Warp Charging, which can top your phone up insanely fast — 0 to 100% in about 30 minutes! Provided, you only use the proprietary power brick to charge it with.

Rumors also state that the OnePlus 9 Pro will support fast, 45 W wireless charging.

And yes, both the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will be 5G-ready.
