Cross-play and cross-progression are slowly becoming industry standards, but many games don’t allow character transfers. However, it seems like at least one developer — Bungie — wanted to incorporate them in Destiny 2, but Sony wouldn’t allow it.

Speaking during a podcast, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier said the following. This quote was first reported by Eurogamer. It looks like Sony didn’t want players leaving the PlayStation 4 (PS4) ecosystem and going to Microsoft’s platforms.

I heard that Bungie wanted to do character transfers for PS4 and PC — before Destiny 2: Forsaken came out — but Sony wouldn’t allow it. Sony is just like, we want people to associate Destiny with PS4, even if that means screwing over other players. It sucks and hopefully Bungie ends it.

Given the fact that Sony now allows cross-play on select titles like Fortnite, hopefully this will change in the near future. Unfortunately, given the company’s massive sales lead over the competition, it seems unlikely because the company has no incentive. That might change soon because next-generation system are around the corner.

What do you think about this statement from Schreier? Would you like the ability to transfer your characters over from PS4 to PC or Xbox One? Let us know.
