Switch to electric cars ‘not enough’ to hit climate target | Ireland

Relying on the public switching to electric cars will not be enough to meet Ireland’s climate emission reduction targets by 2050, a clean transport campaign group has said.

Andrew Murphy, aviation director of Transport and Environment, a Brussels-based group, also told the Oireachtas climate committee that the strategy was not an excuse to build the Galway bypass, as it would simply lead to more vehicles on the road.

“Is our vision to have electric buses in traffic behind electric cars? Because that is what we’ll do if we pursue both electrification of vehicles and the construction of more roads,” Murphy asked on Tuesday night.
