SURAT: Three persons were arrested for allegedly snatching and selling looted mobile phones from people from an area under the limits of Athwa police station here on Saturday. Police recovered 86 mobile phones worth Rs7.74 lakh from the accused, who used to tamper with their IMEI number to ensure that they were not traced through electronic surveillance.

Vijay Naiyaran, 19, Ankur alias Rahul Ray, 23, and Mohammad Noor alias Lalu Cyclewala, 21, were arrested by police from Bhaga Talav area under Athwa police station limits. Naiyaran and Ray arrived there in an autorickshaw to sell six phones which they had snatched from people in different parts of the city in the past few days.

The duo was trying to sell the mobile phones to Cyclewala when police, who had specific information about the gang, nabbed them. Police recovered 80 mobile phones during investigation from Cyclewala. They are now trying to find out from whom Cyclewala had purchased the mobile phones. He has so far failed to produce documents for the mobile phones.

“The accused were nabbed when they came to sell the looted phones. We are yet to investigate how Cyclewala used to sell the looted mobile phones to users, his connection with the gang and also about tampering with their IMEI number,” said a police officer of Athwa police station.

The accused used to snatch mobile phones from people on road while riding a motorcycle, police said.
