Golfer Tiger Woods was brought to a hospital Tuesday after he was injured in an early morning car roll-over, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Key Facts

Woods’ car was heavily damaged after it rolled over in a single-vehicle collision near Los Angeles, the department said, and Woods was conscious after the crash but suffered serious leg injuries.

Woods was removed from his car using a prybar and an axe, but despite earlier reports from the county sheriff, personnel did not use the “jaws of life,” L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl Osby told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center via ambulance, and Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg told Golf Digest he entered surgery afterwards (Steinberg did not respond to requests for comment from Forbes).

Woods was the car’s driver and only occupant, the sheriff’s department said.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said officers saw “no evidence of impairment” from narcotics, alcohol or medication.

Key Background

An 82-time PGA Tour winner, Woods is one of the most accomplished professional golfers in history. He also consistently ranks among the world’s highest-paid athletes, earning more than $62 million from endorsement deals and tour winnings last year according to estimates from Forbes. He’s struggled with injuries throughout this decades-long career, undergoing a litany of knee, ACL, Achilles tendon and back surgeries.

What To Watch For

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department did not release any details on the cause of the car crash, and a spokesperson told Forbes the incident is under investigation.

Woods has dealt with two other car-related issues. He crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant near his Florida home in 2009, and he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence four years ago.

Update (2/23): An earlier version of this article said Woods was removed from his car using the jaws of life, citing a statement from the L.A. County Sheriff. The county fire department later corrected the sheriff’s statement.
