The driver, Deepak Rajaram Ingle (39) of Manjri Budruk, fell asleep while waiting for the passenger outside the Balewadi stadium. Two men, finding Ingle sleeping, woke him up and dragged him out of the car.
One of the robbers brandished a knife and threatened Ingle with dire consequences. He snatched Ingle’s smartphone and then the duo sat in Ingle’s cab and sped away towards Baner.
Assistant inspector Sapna Deotale of the Hinjewadi police said, “Ingle was so afraid of the masked men that he did not resist them, nor raised an alarm. Investigations revealed that there were two cabs, including the one of Ingle, near the bus stop. Both, Ingle and the other cab, driver had fallen asleep. The robbers took advantage of the situation and robbed Ingle of his cab and smartphone. They damaged the phone while fleeing in the cab.”
She said, “There are no CCTV cameras where the incident occurred. Ingle does not know in which direction the robbers fled. He has prima facie given information that they fled in the direction of a bridge leading to Baner.”
She said, “A police team is checking CCTV cameras at other places for tracing the route used by the robbers for establishing their identity and arresting them.”
Ingle’s complaint was lodged under sections 392 (robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code at the Hinjewadi police station. The police have taken serious note of the incident as the highway is prone to carjacking and robberies.
