Samsung Galaxy A8s

Samsung Galaxy A8s made its first official public appearance at the launch event of the Galaxy A6s and Galaxy A9s in China. Variants of these two phones, with the latter rocking a massive four camera lenses on the back, are already selling in multiple global markets, however, it’s actually the Galaxy A8s that you should watch out for.

Samsung’s business in China hasn’t been great lately thanks to competition from local players like XiaomiOppo, Vivo, and Huawei, among others – all of whom are really pushing beyond what’s possible in matters of smartphone design. Samsung wants in and to do this, the Galaxy A8s will reportedly adopt a new display technology that features a camera hole, thus allowing for a true edge-to-edge screen.

Samsung’s teaser shows an all-screen device with no notch and according to tipster Ice Universe, a hole will be drilled into the panel to house the selfie camera. But how is this any better than the notch? Yes, it may be smaller in size, but the OnePlus 6T also has a smaller notch, but hey, a notch is still a notch.

The image in the teaser doesn’t show anything that points to a drilled camera hole, which could also suggest that the sensor will be hidden under the display panel. It could also mean the hole automatically “disappears” when the camera isn’t in use. I mean, at this point, it could be anything, but we should find out sooner than later.

Given its full-screen design, we expected to see an in-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy A8s. However, another tipster, OnLeaks, claims otherwise. He also adds that the A8s will come in three color variants of Silver, Blue and Green.

Much about the specs of the A8s is not known, but recent information suggests it could be the first from Samsung to rock the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710. We don’t know about the memory configuration and software, but knowing Samsung, it’s likely to come with Android 8.1 Oreo preinstalled as the company has always reserved the spot of being the first with a new OS to the Galaxy S family, this time the Galaxy S10.

Samsung Galaxy A8s release date and availability

Samsung will reportedly release the Galaxy A8s in January 2019, suggesting that the launch could happen somewhere this December 2018. Still, Samsung has always used the CES event to launch some of its Galaxy A handsets, so we won’t be surprised if the A8s shows up at the CES 2019.
