Following months of rumours, speculation and leaks, Apple’s AirTag tracker was finally revealed at Apple’s Spring Loaded event earlier this week. Announced alongside the new iPad Pro range, a new Apple TV 4K and redesigned iMacs, the AirTag is Apple’s answer to trackers from the likes of Tile and Samsung, integrated into Apple’s new Find My network.
The disc-like tracker allows you to keep track of valuables like your house keys or backpack, and you could even attach one to your dog thanks to the IP67 water and dust resistance. Using a network of iPhones to track the accessory rather than offering dedicated GPS, the battery lasts an entire year and, unlike offerings from Tile, the battery is replaceable too.
It’s a great little tracker if you’re invested in the Apple ecosystem, and it’s due to go up for pre-order tomorrow. Here’s all you need to know if you’re thinking of buying AirTags in the UK or US.
When will the AirTag be released?
As confirmed by Apple at the Spring Loaded event, the AirTag is set to go up for pre-order tomorrow, 23 April 2021, ahead of delivery beginning a week later on 30 April 2021.
Unlike other Apple product releases, Apple has taken the unusual step to confirm the launch time on the Apple Store. You’ll be able to get your pre-orders in from 1pm BST in the UK – 8am EDT/5am PDT for those in the US – and, like most Apple products at release, we expect it to sell out pretty quickly, so you’ll need to be fast if you want to be one of the first to get their hands on Apple’s portable tracker.
How much will AirTags cost?
AirTags are quite literally designed to be lost, so don’t expect the usual premium associated with Apple products. In fact, at £29/$29 a pop or £99/$99 for a 4-pack, the AirTag is in line with the popular Tile Mate tracker and Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag at £19.99/$24.99 and £29.99/$29.99 respectively.
There’s also the option to customise the tracker if ordering from the Apple Store, likely at no extra charge.
Where can I pre-order AirTags in the UK and US?
As you might expect from an Apple product, the AirTag is set to go up for pre-order at the Apple Store in the UK and US.
We’re yet to hear from third-party retailers stocking the AirTag at the pre-order phase, suggesting that it may be available exclusively from the Apple Store initially, only coming to the likes of John Lewis, Argos and Amazon once it’s available next week.
