Georgia Transportation Board signs off on plans for 316 upgrades – WGAU

The state Board of Transportation has signed off on a package of upgrades to Highway 316, the road that links Athens with metro Atlanta: three projects totaling hundreds of millions of dollars will go for work on 316 in Barrow and Oconee counties. The Oconee County project will remake 316′s intersections with the Oconee Connector and Jimmy Daniel Road.

From the Ga DOT website…

The Georgia Department of Transportation is completing a series of reconstruction projects along the State Route (SR ) 316 corridor from SR 20 in Gwinnett County to SR 10 in Oconee County. The primary challenges to be addressed are high crash rates and congestion. The projects are proposed to reduce potential crash frequency and severity and improve operations and mobility along the corridor.

This series of improvement projects along SR 316 from SR 20 in Gwinnett County to SR 10 in Oconee County are expected to be delivered using Design-Bid-Build through the Office of Program Delivery or Design-Build through the Office of Alternative Delivery. Project phases may be combined or overlap.

During the design phase, GDOT provides preliminary plans (approximately 30%), identifies community/environmental resources and commitments made, and places a bid out to a contractor to produce final plans using innovation and cost saving measures while meeting commitments made to the public as a result of the environmental process. The contractor then builds the project as they complete/receive GDOT approval on final plans. The project may be built in phases, as final plans are further developed.
