AN expert mechanic has revealed the “biggest mistake you can make” with a simple DIY job on your car – it could cost you thousands.
Scotty Kilmer, who has spent over half a century working on motors, issued an urgent warning on his YouTube channel.

In the video, he demonstrated how a simple oil filter change could leave you in the red.
Scotty explained: “I’m going to show you the worst mistake you can make when changing your oil filter.
“You can’t always see…but on the end of it there’s a rubber gasket.
“This gasket sometimes sticks on the engine side when you pull [the filter] off.”
This, he went on, leads to a problem called “double gasketing”.
As the name would suggest, this means you have two gaskets stuck together – the original one that was left in the engine bay and the one on the end of the new oil filter.
This, according to Scotty, leads to a weak seal between the oil filter and engine, making it prone to leaks.
He added: “I’ve seen customers do this on their own cars and blow the engine.
“Two heads may be better than one but two gaskets are not.
“When you have two gaskets… you double your pain when the engine blows out.”
Engine replacements can cost several thousands of pounds so its vital not to make this simple error.
Always check to make sure the gasket has come off with the old filter before fitting a new one.
If it hasn’t, wait until the engine cools then remove the gasket – it should just come free with a sharp pull.
