Pretty soon, there will be more emoji on your iPhone’s keyboard that you can send as reactions or stickers or insert wherever else you use emoji — and it’s about time. It’s been nearly a year since the last emoji update for iOS, and we only received support for 31 new ones then. This upcoming iOS 17 software update is bringing almost four times as many.
The last batch of new emoji for iPhone appeared last March on iOS 16.4 and included pushing hands, a shaking face, fresh hearts, a jellyfish, and 14 others from the Unicode 15.0 character set. This next wave of new emoji comes from the Unicode 15.1 update and will be released with iOS 17.4, which is currently in beta.
There are 118 new emoji when counting skin tone variations, or 28 new ones with skin tones left out of the equation. New emoji include a phoenix, brown mushroom, lime wedge, broken chain, head shaking vertically, head shaking horizontally, as well as four new non-gender-specific family emoji.
You’ll also find six new right-facing people emoji, which are just flipped versions of people emoji you already have. Each of the six sets comes with man, woman, and non-gender-specific variations with different skin tones, amounting to 108.
All the new emoji are visible in the chart below. If you’re not running a beta of iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, or macOS Sonoma 14.4, some emoji will appear as multiple emoji grouped together. These are existing emoji that are combined into emoji ZWJ sequences to create single emoji characters.
Samsung devices running One UI 6.0 or later, as well as some Google-branded products, such as Chrome OS, Gmail, YouTube, and various Android devices, should be able to view these emoji right now.
