Despite Google’s improved Tensor G3 SoC, the overall efficiency of the chip has still been a case of hit or miss. Some Pixel 8 (review) users experienced battery woes although not as bad as the Pixel 7. Now, it appears Google could address this shortcoming with the Tensor G4 SoC that will power the Pixel 9 series and subsequently, provide a battery boost to the lineup.
How is the Tensor G4 better than the Tensor G3?
According to industry sources, South Korean publication FN News claimed Google has selected Samsung to manufacture the flagship Tensor G4 SoC. It mentioned the silicon will be made using the 4 nm FOWLP or Fan-Out Wafer Level Packaging which is the same process used to manufacture the Tensor G3. However, the method is said to rely on a newer version that offers improved efficiency and packaging.
While it remains to be seen just how significant the difference of the new fabrication method will be, the improvement is apparent on the Exynos 2400 SoC used in the base Galaxy S24 (review), which the Tensor G4 could be based on. Samsung’s in-house chip is already touted to feature better performance and heat dissipation than the Exynos 2200 SoC, and this is something the Tensor G4 could benefit from as well.
How fast will the Tensor G4 be compared to the Tensor G3?
As for the chip’s performance, the Tensor G4 is rumored to be internally named “Zuma Pro” and brings the same 10-core CPU setup as the Tensor G3 or “Zuma” with only the notable change found in the clock speed. As for the other areas in the chip, Google could equip it with notable enhancements like expanded AI capabilities via NPU in addition to better power management.
Google’s fully-custom chip is believed to arrive only in 2025 and will be in the form of the Tensor G5, making its way to the Pixel 10 lineup. The mentioned chip will use the codename “Laguna Beach” and is expected to be manufactured by Taiwan’s TSMC instead of Samsung.
There is no word on when the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Tensor G4 are going to be unveiled. The normal schedule of the internet search giant does suggest this will happen this Fall or by October to coincide with the Pixel 8’s launch.
Based on what we know, not only will the Pixel 9 be equipped with the Tensor G4, but the Pixel Fold 2 might also run on the same chipset if the next-generation foldable smartphone’s release is delayed to a later date.
